The LDEF Project sought to minimize logistical, financial, and administrative burdens on investigators and NASA, as part of the Shuttle objective to make space access easier and simpler. When NASA issued the LDEF Announcement of Opportunity in 1976, the only documentation required of a prospective investigator included a letter of intent, one copy of a brief proposal, and proof of institutional support. After selection of the experiments, two-page Memoranda of Agreement were signed for each experiment. Experiment teams had independence as long as the safety and physical integrity of LDEF were not affected. Experiment trays could be prepared in the investigators' labs and shipped to NASA under protective covers.

Archive

The project and mission documentation archive element contains the technical plans, design review documents, safety analyses, stress corrosion, electromagnetic interaction, and structural failures testing and analyses records. It includes documentation on the Announcement of Opportunity process to acquire experiments and the memoranda between NASA and other organizations. It is also planned to include the data recorded during flight operations at Johnson and Kennedy Space Centers.

The documentation is organized chronologically:
  • Concept Development and Design Philosophy
  • Facility Design and Development
  • Acquisition and Project Tasks in Experiment Development
  • Experiment Development Organization Tasks
  • Experiment / LDEF Integration Engineering
  • LDEF / Space Transportation System (STS) Integration Engineering
  • Integration Operations
  • Launch
  • Orbit
  • Retrieval
  • Post-Retrieval Deintegration Operations
