LDEF Trays and Experiments

Seventy-two of the LDEF trays were located in the 12 rows around LDEF periphery; each row contained six (6) bays. Fourteen (14) additional trays were located on the two end frames. The 72 trays were slightly larger than three (3) by four feet (4), with depths of three (3), six (6), or 12 inches. The end-frame trays were approximately 2.5 feet square. Some experiments occupied a portion of one tray, while others occupied a series of trays. While LDEF had no data telemetry, some experiments had need to record data in flight. These experiments used an Experiment Power and Data System (EPDS) that included a magnetic tape module, processor control assembly, and a lithium sulfide battery. Experiments that required protections from all but the on-orbit environment used an Experiment Exposure Control Canister (EECC), a drawer with a small electric drive system that opened after deployment and closed approximately one year later.

Information on the individual experiments will be found under Experiment Documentation.
