LDEF IDE Impact Data
Complete LDEF IDE Impact data set
The complete LDEF IDE Catalog of Impacts is comprised of 12,910 entries
representing 15,108 impacts over a period of 346 days.
The entire impact catalog has been included in two forms. An Excel 4.0
file IDECAT40.XLS can be loaded into Excel
and used to print a fully
formated paper copy of the catalog. In addition, the same data are
contained in a fixed format text file IDEHITS.TXT. This file can be
read via a formatted input statement such as a FORTRAN format statement.
The format and contents of both of these files can be found
here or here.
The primary time entry is the IDE clock tick. Time is also given as
"Days after (LDEF) Deploy" and "Day of Year" 1984 based on the IDE
clock calibration. The
orbital position of the LDEF and the detector tray normal vector at the
time of each impact are also listed as calculated from the
LDEF orbital elements.

Other Impact data set Information
On seven occassions, the exact time of impact was lost due to a data buffer
overflow. Times were lost for a total of 161 impacts (out of 15,108).
In this catalog, these impacts have been assigned to the most likely event
time. This process has been described in the Word for Windows file
BUF_OVFL.DOC.
Spikes
Certain events, called spikes, remained a puzzle as this data archive went
to press. A discussion of spikes can be found
here or
HERE. Detailed
documentation on many of these spikes is contained in the Word for Windows
file BOS_CD.DOC.
