Dr. O'Sullivan is a professor at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. He has been a research physicist at DIAS and he has spent considerable periods as a visiting research physicist abroad at various facilities including CERN and General Electric, Schenectady, NY. His research has spanned over thirty years and during this time he has explored many subjects including: studies devoted to the production and decay of hypernuclei, investigating low energy K-p scattering, and developing and using nuclear track detectors to investigate charge specturm of cosmic rays. Dr. O'Sullivan's interest and experience with cosmic rays have enabled him to contribute to many space missions: Apollo 16 in search of low energy cosmic rays, the Lunar Mission Studies on Apollo 17, the Ultra-Heavy Cosmic Ray Experiment for the LDEF Missions, the Giotto Mission to Halley's Comet to study the electrons, protons and ions in the Halley Environment and the cruise phase studes of particle fluxes, Comet Grigg Skjellerup to perform studies similar to the Halley Comet studies and SLED on the Soviet Phobos Mission to Mars. In addition to his space studies, Dr. O'Sullivan was the principal investigator for the study of Z>1 particles at aircraft altitudes for the European Union project.
Dr. O'Sullivan has been a visiting lecturer, research, and professor at the University of California at Berkeley. He is a fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Royal Astronomical Society. He has served on NASA Steering and Review Committees for astrophysics. He is the author or co-author of over 130 publications. The following are Dr. O'Sullivan's LDEF publications:
