Eugene V. Benton
  • (1958) B.A. Physics, San Jose State University
  • (1960) M.A. Physics, San Jose State University
  • (1968) Ph.D. Materials Science and Physics, Stanford University

Dr. Benton is Professor of Physics and director of the Physics Research Laboratory at the University of San Francisco, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Radiation Measurements. Dr. Benton is widely recognized for his extensive experience in space radiation measurements dating back to the Gemini IV and has played a leading role in the development and use of passive radiation detectors on manned spacecraft. Recent projects include radiation measurements on the Space Shuttle, on LDEF, the Russian Photon-8 and Bion-10 satellites and the Mir space station. Dr. Benton has been a member of NCRP (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements) since 1984 and COSPAR (Committee on Space Research) since 1985.

Dr. Benton, along with Dr. Parnell, serves as the Principal Investigator for the ionizing radiation experiment P0006: The Linear Energy Transfer Spectrum Measurement Experiment. Dr. Benton has authored and co-authored 14 papers on the LDEF ionizing radiation data:
